What is LockBit

The term LockBit has been given to a specific type of malware, and the criminal group that created it also goes by that name. The LockBit organisation also offers this virus for sale to other users in the ransomware as a service (Raas) business model. The malware has been promoted on dark web forums as "the world's fastest encryption software.

According to Toby Lewis, the global head of threat analysis at Darktrace, a UK cybersecurity company, "we have seen a real trend in ransomware gangs operating a 'affiliate model' where they sell access to this malware on the dark web in exchange for payment, often in cryptocurrency." This enables LockBit to expand its business on a franchise-like scale.
